Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir resigns, Vatican Accepts Resignation. March 8 Elections for New Patriarch

Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir will not go unnoticed. In addition to the obvious representation he held, Cardinal Sfeir’s personal commitment accelerated liturgical reforms in the 1980s and 1990s, bearing fruit in 1992 with the publication of a new Maronite Missal. This represents an attempt to return to the original form of the Antiochene Liturgy, removing the liturgical Latinization of past centuries.

From the First Patriarch Youhanna Maroun elected in the 7th Century AD, the Maronites have spread and reached world wide into a population of little over 3.5 million.

A selected few, an Eastern Catholic Church in full communion with the Holy See of Rome, native citizens of the modern Lebanese republic generally maintain that Lebanon is synonymous with Maronite history.
