Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan loses rag with Shimon Peres at Davos

Turkey’s state-run Anatolian news agency quoted Erdogan as saying to Peres: “When it comes to killing you know very well how to kill. I know very well how you killed children on the beaches.”

Erdogan later explained that “President Peres was speaking to the prime minister of Turkey — I am not a leader of some tribe, so he should have addressed me accordingly,”

… so I guess the Israeli-Syrian talks are at a halt, once more.

  1. After the Israeli President pointed out that Turkey would have done the same thing to Gaza if rockets from there had been falling on Istanbul, what could Erdogan do other than yell and walk out once the moderator cut off Erdgan’s digression? If Erdogan had said “no” he would be inviting Turkey’s enemies (i.e., separatist Kurds) to attack, and if he had said “yes” he would be accused of awarding moral authority to Israel – something that is treated by many as a crime in and of itself. For fudging the moral issue Erdogan was hailed as a hero upon his return.

I suppose you’re right: Turkey’s role as mediator in the Israeli-Syrian talks is over. George Mitchell to the rescue?
