U.S. signs $30 billion defense pact with Israel
As if the Israeli military needed more an ego boost from the US. Think time is on Arabs side?
As for American foreign policy, the main Democratic candidates are equally staunch in their support of Israel;
With the unfair, and unbalanced response by Israel due to the capturing of two Israeli soldiers last summer in Lebanon by Hezbollah, (without the consent and knowledge from the Lebanese government, in which Hezbollah is member) has shocked the world by viewing Israel’s rape of the south of Lebanon and flooding it with illegal cluster bombs (numbered in the millions) as, as stated, unfair, with the exception of the United States and Canada which views such response as normal from Israel’s behalf.
One year later, the US administration has agreed to increase Israel’s military aid to 30 billion dollars to be distributed in a span of ten years.
Siniora criticized a proposed U.S. arms deal that offers a sharp increase in defense aid to Israel, a rare rebuke against Washington by the Western-backed premier.
The plans to increase military aid to Israel by 25 percent, from $2.4 billion to $3 billion per year, guaranteed for 10 years.
“This effort will help bolster forces of moderation and support a broader strategy to counter the negative influences of al-Qaeda, Hizballah, Syria, and Iran.” – U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice
ehem… meanwhile a statement from Siniora’s office mentioned the “Prime Minister has learned with surprise and astonishment” about the US military assistance to Israel,
“The continued backing of Israel in such a manner will escalate the crises and increase feelings among the Arabs and Muslims that their cause are ignored while Israel’s interests are protected,” it said.
“If these funds were allocated to consolidate peace (in the Middle East)…or spent on peaceful projects then the American message would have been different,” the statement added.
